How do online slot games work?

In traditional slot machines, a player pulls the handle to spin the reels. The reels stop at different symbol combinations that qualify for a number. These numbers are given out by the random number generator (installed in the machine), on the spot.

Based on this principle, online slot machines are also a random game, and irrespective of the programming language used, a random-number generator is always installed in the slots software. So, while playing an online slot game, the player clicks on ‘Spin’, that spins the reels and it works on the same principle – the reels stop at various symbol combinations, where these numbers get a certain value assigned by the random number generator.

Slot games are designed to select a set of random numbers continually. So, most of the time, slots are programmed using languages like C + or Java. Latest trends reveal that most casinos/ vendors are shifting their focus to online browser based versions. This allows them to play without downloading/ installing the gaming software on to their desktop.

Usually, such online browser based versions are powered by Macromedia Flash and Java Applet software that makes it easier to play online slot games, without any downloads. As a player, one would have to pre-install Flash plug-in in the browser to be able to view the flash slots.
